Emerald Cut Engagement Rings – Tips

Emerald cut engagement rings are an extremely popular choice for this type of ring.     A lot of people know that diamonds are the strongest substance to man and that makes them think incorrectly that they cannot get damaged. Diamonds can chip, get scratched and their edges, if they are as sharp as in this particular cut, can break.  Therefore, emerald cut diamonds need to be set securely.  The safest setting is the four or six prong setting which also allows the most light at the stone thereby increasing the brilliance effect.  A bezel setting is not appropriate as this style of cut needs as much light as possible. For that reason a channel setting is also discounted.

The only downside as any woman with a prong set ring knows is that the prongs can sometimes become a little loose and can snag clothes. This is particularly annoying when you are wearing stockings or something fine like a cashmere jumper.  The solution is to have your ring regularly checked by a reputable jeweler as loose prongs can result in lost stones.  Stockings aren’t as expensive to replace as a diamond!

If your partner has small hands and chubby fingers (although you obviously would never say that to her face), the emerald cut is not the cut you should choose for probably her most prized possession.  This particular cut is long so it suits those women blessed with piano playing hands.   The stone is almost always set perpendicular to the band but in some rare cases it will be set lengthways.

You can choose an emerald cut solitaire or a three or perhaps five stone engagement ring.   The emerald cut is also used on other gemstones apart from diamonds.  You can find it on rubies, sapphires and of course emeralds where it first originated hence its name.

When deciding on your engagement ring, one of the decisions will be which type of stones you want to use.  In the USA, most opt for diamonds only but in Europe a combination of semi precious stones and diamonds is very popular.

Emerald cut engagement rings are not the cheapest ring you could buy. The reason is that this particular style of cut is quite unforgiving so only diamonds of certain clarity should be used.   Once you start excluding stones due to the inherent flaws rather than changing the style of cut, the dollar price starts to rise.  Also the cut is only suitable for larger stones anyway so that also adds to the cost.   No decent gemologist would use an emerald cut on a large diamond with flaws visible to the naked eye as this particular cut only accentuates these flaws.  A princess or round cut would be a better option.

Emeralds cut engagement rings are popular as they look fantastic and expensive.  They are also the style of choice for many rich celebrities which only increase their attraction for us mere mortals.  Grace Kelly, the Hollywood actress who became a real life princess had a 12 carat emerald cut engagement ring.
